First Aid courses provided by St John Training Services are to resume again from next week.

The first sessions since the easing of the lockdown take place at Les Cotils, St Peter Port on Monday 15th March.

Teaching of first aid had to be temporarily suspended due to the restrictions that were brought in across Guernsey during the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in January.

Heather Langlois, Training & Development Manager at St John Training Services said: “We are delighted to be able to start running first aid courses again. There will be some changes to the way we operate, in line with the latest public health advice. For example, all delegates will be socially distanced and will be required to bring and wear their own mask for the entirety of the course, aside from eating and drinking.  I’d like to thank everyone who unfortunately had a course postponed, for their understanding. We are now working hard to reschedule and reallocate spaces on upcoming courses.”

Participants who are due to take part in training in the next couple of weeks are being contacted directly about the forthcoming courses. People who were due to attend one of the courses which was postponed during the lockdown are also being contacted so they can be offered alternative dates, however due to the large numbers of people affected anyone who urgently needs to complete a first aid course or requalification, is asked to contact St John Training Services by emailing info@firstaidtraining.gg

Mrs Langlois added “First aid training remains an essential skill, which we believe everyone should have. There have been some changes to the way we teach CPR during the Covid pandemic. The current guidelines say that for a person who is unconscious and not breathing the rescuer still needs to dial 999 for an ambulance straight away and start CPR, but there is no need to do rescue breaths. Instead just do continuous ‘hands-only CPR’, which means pushing up and down in the centre of the chest until help arrives.”
