Today is St John Day. Guernsey is one of a small number of places in the world where the statutory ambulance service is provided by St John.
St John has been active in the Bailiwick since 1882 and has provided the island’s ambulance service on behalf of the government since 1936.
We are part of the International Order of St John, so on St John Day we join with St John people around the world to celebrate our shared global values, qualities and history. Today is an opportunity to thank all of those who provide care and compassion in the service of humanity.

We are continuing to experience fluctuating periods of high demand with our ambulance crews sometimes responding to multiple calls in a short space of time.
To ensure every patient gets the appropriate response and right care, the Joint Emergency Services Control Centre uses a triage system to identify the most urgent and life threatening cases.
Category 1 and 2 calls receive a blue light response, with a target time of within 8 minutes for the most serious of cases. For Category 3 and 4 calls ambulances are deployed at road speed so we may take longer to arrive on scene, with a target response time of within 2 hours for Category 4 cases.
Dialling 999 doesn’t always mean you’ll get an ambulance arriving immediately with blue lights and sirens.
