Next week we mark 90 years of Guernseyâs St John Ambulance & Rescue Service. To mark the anniversary Guernsey Museums is staging an outdoor exhibition telling our story through the decades. The exhibition opens on Tuesday and runs until September.
We will also be sharing images from the past 90 years in the return of #WayBackWednesday as a tribute to the founders of the service and all those who have served our island community with care and compassion since 1936.

Many of us will no doubt be enjoying barbeques on the islandâs beaches throughout the summer season. So weâd like to share some advice for islanders on how to stay safe when cooking food on the beach, while remaining respectful to the local environment:
âď¸ To safely extinguish a barbeque, embers and surrounding sand, douse them in water until they are cold. If the barbeque is disposed while still hot, bins can catch fire and cause harm to wildlife and other people.
âď¸ Dispose of the cold remnants properly by either taking them home or by placing them carefully in a litter bin.
âď¸ Barbeques can only be lit between 5pm and midnight on the islandâs north and west coast beaches, excluding the Richmond end of Vazon.
âď¸ They are not to be held on the South or East coasts, i.e. from Soldierâs Bay to Pleinmont.
âď¸ They should be lit in a small fire bowl or bucket.
âď¸ Permission is required for beach barbeques to be attended by more than 50 people. You can apply for permission here: gov.gg/BBQform
All your litter from a trip to the beach should be placed safely in the appropriate litter bin or taken home with you. Avoid taking glass as it is easily broken causing risk of injury to yourself and other beach users.
Please respect other beach users by following these steps â it helps keep Guernseyâs beaches as a safe and beautiful space for everyone to enjoy.
For more information about Guernseyâs Beach Code can be found at gov.gg/beachcode
